Hamburger square project

Hamburger Square Better Block

In Fall 2014 the synerG Young Professionals, City of Greensboro, the Piedmont Authority for Regional Transportation (PART), ArtsGreensboro, Action Greensboro, Preservation Greensboro, Elsewhere Museum and Bicycling in Greensboro partnered to create a "Better Block" demonstration project to improve bicycle and pedestrian access and create an aesthetically inviting public space through Hamburger Square in Downtown Greensboro. Travel lanes were narrowed, temporary crosswalks, bicycle lanes, and stop signs were installed, and seating, artwork and entertainment stage were placed to create a more pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly and inviting environment.

Through surveys with attendees and the real-time demonstration project, the partners are developing a phased approach to improve the Hamburger Square area to make it more open and inviting to the community.

Projects and elements in the works for Hamburger Square:
· Removal of shrubs to make the green spaces more accessible –COMPLETED
· Lane dieting, more crosswalks and other pedestrian friendly changes through Greensboro     Department of Transportation
· Art work installed (sculptures, murals, etc)
· Event programming
