Why Greensboro:

I made the decision to move to Greensboro in one day when I was a teenager. So I’m actually not sure why, it was all young impulse. It was somewhat experimental—I hadn’t planned on staying this long but Greensboro has been working its magic to keep me here. Greensboro is my second home now, which is a big contrast comparing to Hong Kong. I enjoy life in both cities and am glad that I can always feel relaxed and at ease here.

Leadership Development Opportunities

Experience Greensboro

Through this Greensboro Chamber of Commerce community orientation program, Experience Greensboro participants are given a rare insight into our community through a series of six intensive sessions and several community-focused experiences. The program includes familiarization with the history, government, economic development, education, health/human services and arts/parks and recreation aspects of Greensboro and Guilford County. The presenters are experts in their respective fields, and welcome the opportunity for dialogue with participants in open forum. In past sessions, presenters have included the City Manager, County Manager, School Superintendent, school board members, elected officials, university administrators, health care administrators, and other key community stakeholders. The program is offered in early spring and again in the fall for half day sessions spanning 6 weeks, with approximately 30 people in each class. Visit www.greensborochamber.com for more information.

Leadership Greensboro

Leadership Greensboro is a program of the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce, takes place from September to June each year with a class of approximately 40-45 leaders. The program prepares a diverse group of citizens to assume responsible leadership roles that will strengthen the community. Since members of the class have a variety of occupations, Leadership Greensboro addresses leadership issues in the context of business, education, community and civic organizations, government and neighborhoods. With enhanced leadership skills, graduates help their individual organizations succeed and thus create a stronger foundation for Greensboro's future. Young professionals register by completing a five-page questionnaire describing themselves, why they want to serve, their area of interest, and whether on city and county commissions and task forces or nonprofit boards. Visit www.greensborochamber.com for more information.

Other Voices

Other Voices is designed to be a leadership development and community-building experience in which participants – in frank and open dialogue – build their insight and understanding of the roots of prejudice; share cross-cultural environments; evaluate personal biases that play out in behaviors; and develop strategies for alleviating these problems individually, in small groups at the workplace, and in the community. The program year covers a nine-month period, with an average of 20–25 people enrolled. Visit www.greensborochamber.com for more information.

City Academy

The City of Greensboro's Government Works: A City Academy is a series of classes designed to teach Greensboro residents about all aspects of City government. The mission is to develop future leaders by building a better community through the efforts of well-informed and civically engaged residents. Class sessions include information on topics ranging from police to economic development to leadership. Classes are limited to 25 residents and are held each Thursday from September 3 through November 12, 2009 with two extra-curricular Police classes held one week. Graduation is scheduled at the City Council meeting on November 17, 2009. To receive more information about City Academy, check the website http://www.greensboro-nc.gov/residents/academy.htm.
